On 29th August, the London 2012 Paralympics was opened by world renounced physicist Stephen Hawking . The Games began in 1948, but it wasn´t until the 1988 Games in Seoul that the term Paralympics was first used.
Let´s take a look at five prominent athletes to look out for from the English speaking world….
Oscar Pistorius
The South African athlete will compete in the 100m, 200m and 400m track event. Having also competed in the able-bodied games, Pistorius has on several occasions ignited a debate as to whether athletes with prosthetic limbs have an unfair advantage.
Martine Wiltshire
After losing both of her legs in the London 2005 bombing, Martine Wiltshire began playing sitting volleyball for Great Britain and reached such a high standard that she has been selected for the sitting volleyball team in the 2012 London Paralympics.
Matt Cowdrey
Likely to win several medals at this year´s Paralympics, the Australian Matt Cowdrey is certainly one to look out for in a number of swimming events.
Nigel Murray
Competing in Great Britain´s boccia team, a sport similar to bowls, Nigel Murray is arguably the best and most experienced player on the team
Scott Danberg
US athlete Scott Danberg was nominated to hold the US flag at the opening ceremony of the 2012 London Paralympics. It´s hardly surprising…2012 will be the fifth time he will have competed in the event. He has competed in both althetics and swimming events in the past – this year he is competing in the men´s discus throw.
