
As the Summer approaches and the London Olympics gets closer and closer, thousands of people will soon be packing their bags and heading for London, the capital of the England. There are many things to do, see and learn about in London… here are just a few highlights
THE SIGHTS
The Houses of Parliament and Big Ben
Everyone calls the big clock tower in central London “Big Ben”, but this is not actually its real name. The clock tower is really called St Stephen´s Tower. “Big Ben” is the name of the 13-ton bell inside the clock. No matter what its actual name is though – it´s impressive, and definitely worth visiting!
Buckingham Palace
This is the Queen´s official London residence. It´s huge… with over 660 rooms, some of which are open to the public in Summer.
The London Eye
Situated on the banks of the River Thames, the London eye is the largest obervation wheels in the world. It offers spectacular views over the city -not to be missed.
Hyde Park
This is the the most famous park in London. It is also the home of the world famous “Speakers´ Corner”. Here people gather to speak (and shout) about topics that interest them, and have informal debates.
THE MARKETS
Borough Market
This is one of the best food markets in London, housed under magnificent railway arches. You can get anything there ranging from traditional fruit and vegetables, to hummous and ostrich!
Camden Market
Bright colours, wierd and wonderful shops and stalls await you in this ecclectic market where you can find and ecclectic mix of clothes, music and food.
Portobello Market
There´s nothing you won´t find in this market situated in the Notting Hill area of London (yes, the same area as where the film was set!)
THE MUSEUMS AND GALLERIES
The British Museum
Here you will find everything ranging from Roman Art, Mesopotamia, Ancient Egypt and Anglo-Saxon Britain. Check out their current exhibitions on their website: http://www.britishmuseum.org/
Madame Tussauds
Founded in 1835 by Marie Tussaud, after whom the museum is named, this wax museum is the home to wa models of famous people from all over the globe – Sir Walter Scott, Michael Jackson, Cristiano Ronaldo… to name but a few. The Tate Modern
