Best TV series to help you learn English

When it comes to learning a new language, English is probably the easiest one to get access to: Over 400 million native speakers worldwide and you will find millions of popular English language movies and songs being played on every continent. English has grown massively in the past two centuries and today, everyone has to have at least a basic understanding of English in order to survive in the competitive job market. But how can you learn English in a fun way without getting bored by vocabulary lists and grammar exercises? No idea? Just switch your TV on!

The Simpsons

The longest-running animated sitcom in the history of American television is the satirical story about a working class family living in the city of Springfield. Created by Matt Groening in 1989, “The Simpsons” quickly became the favorite TV series for young adults and has an ever growing fan base. The twenty-fourth season started a month ago and if you want to watch the daily adventures of Homer, Bart & Co you should definitely do it in English as the snappy comments are a lot more fun in their original tone!

 

How I met your mother

It’s the year 2030 and the kids of Ted Mosby are listening to the entertaining adventures of their Dad on how he met their mother. Cut to 25 years before that, Ted, an architect living in New York, had decided to search for the love of his love after seeing his best friend Marshall get married. His friends are helping him wherever they can, especially Barney, a wannabe womanizer with disputable opinions who is always the first one to offer advice on the best ways to pick up girls. Narrated through a series of flashbacks, we get to know the long road Ted had to take to finally find the right woman!

 

Friends

The show is about the ups and downs of the lives and loves of six friends living in Manhattan and is another US television classic. Created in the mid-90s, the hilarious and often pretty wacky characters of Rachel, Joey, Phoebe & Co, quickly became idols of the public and the series gained millions of fans worldwide. The friends characters try to manage the typical problems of 25 to 35 year olds and the conversations,  full of pointed remarks and worldly wisdom, are a great way to improve your colloquial English skills!

 

Mad Men

One of the many cult series of the past years is “Mad Men”, a story about the competitive market in the advertising industry of 1960s New York. The Ad executive Don Draper is leading the business but many others would like to see him fail and Don has to deal with the shadows of his past. Matthew Weiner’s award-winning drama gives a portrait of social and economic tendencies in the 60s.

 

Sex and the City

The successful story of four ladies living in New York City sharing their sexual adventures, job problems and passion for shoes (and shopping in general) very fast became the number one series for young women all over the world. Based on the book of the same name by Candace Bushnell, this comedy shows all the facets of the lives of modern women aged between 30 and 45 in cosmopolitan cities. Spending an evening with Carrie, Samantha & Co, you can be sure that your vocabulary will get enriched with new slang words!
